We've witnessed our favorite stars in full glam on the red carpet, in campaigns, and on set of our editorial shoots, accumulating tips and tutorials from their talented hair and makeup artists in the process. But we're still left wondering one thing: How do these celebrities approach their beauty routines on their own? In Byrdie's newest series, Prescribed By, we offer you exclusive beauty prescriptions from your favorite influencers, featuring their signature beauty looks and the tips (and exact products!) you need to pull them off.
We're going to let you in on a little secret: Ashley Tisdale has some of the best cat-eye skills in Hollywood. It's rare to find a celeb who doesn't rely on a makeup artist's handiwork for such a flawless flick, but whenever Tisdale posts a photo of her bronzy cat eye on Instagram, odds are she did it herself.
Last year, Tisdale told us that one of the most common questions she gets from her fans is how to do her signature cat eye. So to help us launch our Prescribed By series, we got her to reveal the secret recipe to her trademark eye makeup-and it's surprisingly doable. If you struggle with liquid liner (read: if you are human), keep scrolling to get the details on Tisdale's five-minute cat-eye technique.
Step 1: Eye ShadowBH Cosmetics Illuminate by Ashley Tisdale Beach Goddess Palette $12 $10Shop
Tisdale released her "Illuminate" makeupВ collection in partnership with BH Cosmetics last year, and these eye shadow palettes are genuinely all she ever uses anymore. To start her signature cat eye, Tisdale takes a blending brush and gently blends a dark-brown color into the crease of her eyes. Then, using the same brush and palette, she applies Maui, a lighter shade, to the lids. This creates a nice warm base for the graphic cat eye.
Need a good eye shadow brush recommendation? We're fans of Wet n Wild's fluffy crease brush. (That $1 price tag is not a hallucination.)
Step 2: Smudge PotBobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner $26Shop
This step is the true secret to Tisdale's look. Instead of going straight in with a liquid liner pen, she uses an angled eyeliner brush and a Bobbi Brown gel liner to create the cat-eye shape.В
She starts by placing her brush in the middle of the lid, right next to the lash line; then, she glides the brush outward to create that perfect angled flick at the outer corner. Using a smudge pot lets you make mistakes that are much easier to clean up than liquid liner. It also creates a stencil that you can now trace with your liquid.E.l.f. Small Angled Brush $3Shop
PS: This small angled eyeliner brush by E.l.f. works perfectlyВ for the technique described above.
Step 3: Liquid LinerStila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner $22Shop
Tisdale's last step is to go in with herВ liquid liner. Her favorite is this inky black pen from Stila, which offers rich pigment and a super-flexible tip, which makes lining the eye much easier. As Tisdale explains, you simply want to trace over the cat-eye shape you already created with the gel pot. This will make the look bolder and more graphic. But since there's already a layer of black pigment, you don't have to worry quite so much about the line being perfect. Et voilГ .
