The wonders of dry shampoo are certainly not new-not by a long shot-and while I've been using the grease-busting, root-lifting product for years, I'd never known of its virtues, at least not in full. That is until Mark Townsend, the hairstylist behind Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen's looks for over 15 years, took a can of Dove's best-selling Refresh + Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($6) to my thin strands.

The styling started out like any other. Townsend's lovely assistant washed my hair, massaging my scalp like a true angel while I relaxed at the sink. Townsend used a detangling spray as he brushed out my wet curls as the formula keeps the cuticle closed and really works well pre-blow-dry. He followed up with Dove Style + Care Curls Defining Mousse ($5). "It has moisturizers in there, so it really is more like a very airy lotion," he told me. "I put it in damp hair before styling."

Townsend began to dry my hair with a Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($399), known for its speed and ability to prevent heat damage. He curled it, using two different irons to make sure each piece looked slightly different, offering a more natural, Olsen-esque effect. Then came the piГЁce de rГ©sistance, the dry shampoo. But he didn't just apply it to the underside of my roots like I'd seen before (and done myself about a million times). Instead, he used a volumizing and texturizing formula and sprayed it lightly all over my entire head.

"I do it to make clean hair look dirty," he told me with a laugh. Townsend then gave each curl a little shake and then sprayed a little more, focusing on my mid-lengths and ends as well as my roots. This allows the product to work into your hair like a texturizing spray would, but with a bit more grit. For this style, a laid-back blowout, it creates that ever-evasive piece-y look that I can't ever seem to pull off on my own. Turns out, I was using the wrong products.

When I woke up the next morning, I added a bit more of the product throughout my hair to give my slept-on locks a bit more oomph, and it worked. Right there, in my dimly lit bathroom, was the same blowout I had been working with the day before, fresh from the salon. And you know what? I think Ashley and Mary-Kate would be proud.
